Amundsen Departs

The CCGS Amundsen departed from Quebec City on July 26. It is heading north to do work in Labrador, Cumberland Sound, Baffin Bay and what we call the 'North Water' between Greenland and Ellesmere Island.

There will be a science and crew changeover in Resolute on September 5 after which the Amundsen will head through the Northwest Passage to the Beaufort Sea. A couple of weeks of work will be done there and the ship will zip back through the passage heading for home in Quebec City. In all, 12 weeks of science work will be completed this season.

Field Update: MV Nuliajuk

After a couple days of down time for crew swap, resupply, and refuel we got back underway at dusk. We're headed back to the survey grounds in Lake Melville for a couple more days of hydrographic survey before navigating through the last bits of winter ice on our transit to Resolution Island, just south of Baffin Island.

While alongside in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Labrador we saw water bombers refilling to fight the nearby fires.

Introduction 2013

Welcome to the Ocean Mapping Group's brand new blog.

The Ocean Mapping Group is a research organization within the Department of Geodesy & Geomatics Engineering at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.

2013 has already been busy and we're just getting started. We've completed an interesting program in Squamish, B.C. mapping turbidity currents with a huge suite of acoustic tools. A blog post on this will follow...

OMG's mapping platform, the CSL Heron.

We're also currently mapping in Lake Melville, Labrador aboard the MV Nuliajuk. The vessel will travel north later in the summer and build on work done in 2012.

Mobilization has also begun aboard the CCGS Amundsen. The Ocean Mapping Group operates the Kongsberg EM302 multibeam system and a 3.5 kHz sub-bottom profiler aboard the icebreaker and has since 2003. We also process and disseminate the data which is publicly viewable in various formats. The google map portal, the stripmap pages, and the original basemaps.

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more posts...
